AI Overviews Killed Your Traffic — Here's What to Check and Fix

If your organic traffic dropped and Google AI Overviews now answers your target queries directly, you're not imagining it — a large share of searches now end without a click. The fix isn't reversing that trend, it's shifting from competing for the click to competing to be the source AI Overviews cites, which needs different content than ranking alone.

Before doing anything else, confirm AI Overviews is actually the cause — a lot of traffic drops get blamed on it that are really an algorithm update, a technical regression, a seasonal dip, or a straightforward ranking loss. Search Console tells you which: if impressions held steady while clicks fell, that's the classic AI Overview signature — you're still being shown, just not clicked as often. If impressions themselves dropped, that's a ranking or indexing problem, and it needs a completely different fix than anything below.

If it is AI Overviews, the next question is whether you're cited inside it. That splits into two genuinely different problems that get treated as one all the time.

If you're cited but clicks still dropped: for some queries, that's simply the new floor — a share of searchers now get a complete answer without clicking anyone, cited or not, and that traffic isn't coming back. What's still fixable is whether you're the only citation or one of several; if several sources are cited, the fix is giving searchers a reason to click through that the summary can't replace — a calculator, pricing specifics, a deeper comparison, something genuinely beyond what fits in a three-sentence answer.

If you rank for the query but aren't cited in the Overview at all: this is the more fixable case, and it's the same discipline as AEO everywhere else — restructure the page so a question-shaped heading is followed immediately by a direct 40–60 word answer, add FAQPage schema, and make sure the actual answer isn't buried three paragraphs into marketing copy. Overviews pull from passages that are unambiguous and easy to extract; if yours requires reading around the answer to find it, that's usually the whole problem.

There's a third case worth naming honestly, because it doesn't have a content fix: some purely informational queries are now fully answered inside the Overview for good, and no amount of restructuring wins back a click Google never intended to send anywhere. The strategic response there isn't to keep optimizing a query AI Overviews will always be able to fully answer — it's to shift effort toward queries where a complete self-serve answer doesn't end the buyer's decision: pricing, comparisons, "who should I hire," reviews of the options. Those still send clicks, because the answer to "is this the right choice for me" isn't something an AI Overview can finish on its own.

For ongoing monitoring, track impressions-with-zero-clicks as its own line in Search Console, not just total clicks — that split is what tells you whether a query has moved into "seen but not clicked" territory versus actually falling out of visibility, and each one needs a different response.
